A crisis can be e.g. an environmental catastrophe, a large scale accident, natural disaster, political unrest and state of war. What makes a crisis situation unique is its suddenness and unexpectedness. The Embassy of Finland in Pretoria aims on its part to follow-up and report on the changes concerning the security situation. It is also important to follow the instructions issued by the local authorities and media.
To accelerate the initiation of needed interventions, it is recommended that Finnish citizens staying in the Mission’s domain (South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar and Mauritius) declare their contact information at Matkustusilmoitus.fi. All personal information will be treated confidentially according to the laws of data protection and consular services.
In the case of a crisis situation one should restrict unnecessary movements outside home and to follow local media and the websites of the Embassy of Finland in Pretoria as well as of the Foreign Ministry. If possible, one should exit the crisis area or at least remove the family members outside the area. Those Finnish citizens or family members residing permanently in the country in question should inform the Finnish Embassy on their potential moving out of the crisis area.
The embassies of the other Nordic and EU countries are obligated to assist Finnish citizens in the case of an emergency, if there is no Finnish embassy in the area.
In the case of an emergency outside the office hours one can contact the duty number at +358 9 1605 5555.
