Welcome to the homepages of the Embassy of Finland in Pretoria. From these pages you can find information of our functions, services, and basic information about Finland and South Africa.
The diplomatic relations between Finland and South Africa were established 60 years ago, on the 7th of January 1949. Until 1991 Finland was represented by a Chargé d'Affaires, and the same year the first Ambassador was elected. Finland, together with other Nordic Countries, is known for it's strong anti-apartheid support, which is still very much valued in the country.
Since 1994 South Africa has been an established and stable democracy. Free elections have been organized regularly. The country has progressive constitution which is based on democracy, equality, and respecting the human rights. The relations between Finland and South Africa are excellent and wide range of societal areas, political relations, economics, science, and culture, are encompassed.
The task of the Embassy of Finland in Pretoria is to promote Finland's national interests abroad and to supervise interests and rights of the Finnish citizens in South Africa. The Embassy maintains contact between South African and Finnish officials, and makes our strengths known not only in South Africa but also in the so called side-accreditated countries: Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Mauritus, and Madagascar. These duties are managed together with our Embassy in Cape Town and with the network of Honorary Consuls in Southern Africa.
South Africa is our number one partner in economical cooperation in Africa. Because of the global recession the volumes of trade and investments have reduced, but when the situation improves new business possibilities will surely open. South Africa's base for national economy has remained stable even during the crisis. Partnership agreement between our countries established in spring 2009 is emphasizing on the sectors of knowledge based society, environmental issues, education, and entrepreneurship.
We hope that our web pages can offer you necessary information about the relations between South Africa and Finland and the current matters. Do not hesitate to contact us for further questions. All of us here at the Embassy are pleased to work on behalf of Finland.
Tiina Myllyntausta
